Book of the Day: The Call of Zulina

As promised, I’m featuring each of the four initial launch books from Abingdon Press’ new women’s fiction line. Today, Kay Marshall Strom’s The Call of Zulina. All you historical fiction buffs are in for a treat. Kay, a veteran writer, brings a deft touch and great compassion for the story of the African slave trade in the18th century. The first in a trilogy called Grace in Africa, the books follow a young, mixed-race woman named Grace as she learns the truth behind the slave trade of the late 1700s.
Kay knows firsthand what the present-day sufferings in Africa look like. She’s traveled all over the world and has been to Africa multiple times. She’s also a woman with great passion to right social injustices, and works tirelessly to spread awareness and give voice to the poor and suffering. I was impressed with the quality of Kay’s writing, although I must confess I don’t read historical fiction often. Yet, as I am learning, genre does not equal poor quality. The Call of Zulina will keep you reading and may even spur you to get involved with one of Kay’s favorite pastimes–raising money for the poor and suffering. Once Grace gets into your heart, your ideas about the slave trade will change forever. Buy this book at Amazon, any bookstore or receive a 40% discount @ www.cokesbury.com
