A reader asked how a writer knows when to use a simple interior thought and when to use self-talk that needs italics. I usually decide this way: If my character is simply thinking along but not necessarily reacting to something strongly, I might stay with regular thoughts (EX: That day, Mom said I was grounded. Fat chance.) If the character is reacting strongly to something said or done, I might use the self-talk (EX: I don’t care what Mom says, I’m going out tonight.)
Writing Tip for Today: When you decide which type of “thought” is appropriate, let your character’s emot-o-meter dictate which style you employ. Save the italicized thoughts for very strong reactions–if too much self-talk happens, the reader will feel trapped inside your character’s head.
Thanks Linda, that was very helpful.
Hope you are having a good spring break.
