The competition is stiff in publishing, as the industry goes through huge changes. Many writers feel attacked on all sides as they fight for ink. So how can helping other writers help you?
Writing Tip for Today: I’ve been to conferences where you could practically see the sharks circling. I’ve also been to ones where the atmosphere was kind, helpful and generous. If you aren’t the type who’s willing to scratch and claw your way to the bargain table, take heart. I believe that in giving to other writers, you profit too. Here’s why:
- Writing Karma. I don’t know if karma is real, but in the writing world it seems to be. You offer to publicize another writer’s book on your network. I call it cross-pollination. Later on, that writer remembers your kindness and returns the favor. Result? You both win.
- All For One. Why should it matter if you give the name of your agent to another writer? You don’t have to give a recommendation (in fact, most authors can’t do this at their agent’s request) but the name? When I run into a writer who’s coy about the agent’s name I feel sort of unworthy in a weird way. Why not all for one and one for all?
- We All Need Encouragement. At one time or another every writer faces discouragement, rejection or disappointment. Do you want to be the writer who can’t be bothered to help another writer? When your own dark night arrives, you might find no one willing to encourage you. But if you are always open to listening, speak helpful words and maybe even give a tip on submissions or writing, others may remember and want to reciprocate. Why not encourage a writer today?
Certainly, it is better to make friends than enemies!
I agree, Tracy. But I’m always surprised at how many writers feel it’s their duty to take other writers down a peg or two. Sometimes the truth hurts but you don’t have to shred the person under the writing while you’re delivering that truth. If it is a truth. Opinions are more like it. ~Linda
