A Short Hiatus

I’m traveling this week and part of next for a writing conference, so I’m going on a two-week hiatus. Kind of a mini-vacay. Even though I’m gone, you can access my archives for fabulous writing tips you can actually use. Meanwhile, here’s a mini-tip on the proper use of an hiatus in your fiction.
Writing Tip for Today: When you need to break for a scene or to switch viewpoint in a chapter, use a hiatus.

  • Hard Return. To create a hiatus (a blank space between scenes, simply hit “Enter” which should create an extra blank space. You only need one extra space.
  • One Star. If you must type something in the space, ONE STAR is sufficient. In publishing, the character between scenes is called a “dingbat.” But you’ll only look like one if you type a long row of characters across your hiatus.
  • POV Switch. Finally, if the hiatus denotes a switch to another POV character, DO NOT INDENT the first line of the scene immediately following the hiatus. If the same POV character continues after the break, indent as usual.
Keep writing! I hope to be brimming with great writing tips when I return.
