And the Winner Is . . .

Thanks to Carla Stewart and to all those who left a comment for the giveaway of her new book, Broken Wings. In a totally unscientific way, I’ve chosen the recipient: Lex Gilmore! Please message me with your postal address and Carla will get a copy of Wings to you. My email will appear at the end of the post.
Writing Tip for Today: How do writers know when they are winners?

  • For some, it’s publication, for sure. But take it from me, that glow only lasts a few moments. Then you get slammed with the fear that it’ll never happen again. So I think of myself as a winning writer because I cannot imagine doing anything else except to write. I love my job, even if it doesn’t pay the bills.
  • You’re a winner if revision is your best friend. Often, beginning writers are horrified to cut, axe and otherwise get rid of words they worked so hard to put down. When you start getting excited at the prospect of improving a draft, you are a winner.
  • You’re a winner if you come to embrace process over product. Sure, we all want to win prizes, land on bestseller lists or see an empire grow out of our ideas. But that’s just it: we writers are idea people. It’s the creating I love, the constant search to connect with readers and with that elusive part of me that some call “the zone,” the muse. It’s that way you can enter your world and then look up and see that 10 hours have passed. Whenever that happens for me, I know I’ve won, if only for a little while. Keep writing!
