Who wants to read about a Christian writer who had polio?

The other day I asked a writer friend who’s web-savvy (I am not) how you get your blog “out there,” via links or other methods. She said, “But who will want to read about a Christian writer who had polio?” Yikes! I went straight into inner hysteria. My friend was a little blunt, to be sure, but her answer goes straight to the heart of how we alienate ourselves from each other. I am OK as long as I don’t say much about what’s “wrong” with me. Especially if what’s wrong happens to be something which makes people aware of their own frailty. I suppose writers should aim to make connections, or universal truths, in order to have an audience. How universal are polio survivors? As one literary agent told me, “Polio isn’t news.”
And what about the Christian part? I write about my journey with God, the One who is singing love songs to creation, to all peoples, to you. To me. In some minds I’m automatically a fundamentalist, a disabled one at that. Maybe there aren’t as many disabled progressive Christians as WalMart shoppers or folks who like scrapbooking. But I’ll bet you’re out there. Now all I have to do is get up to speed on links and so forth, so we can find each other.
