The Best Book Club

The Book Club had readers but no money. They were wondering if I’d come speak to them anyway. I was thrilled to say yes. I had the pleasure of meeting with the Junction City Methodist Book Club last night, and we enjoyed scrumptious food, a gorgeous forested view and a lively discussion about The Fence My Father Built and its themes of knowing your roots, finding your way home and the pull of God in our lives.
I met these awesome people and although they expected me to give them insights into my novel, I came away with a treasure chest of thoughtful comments that touched me deeply. These folks not only read my book, they were able to make intelligent, even profound observations on its layers of meanings. Thank you all so much.
Writing Tip for Today: Book clubs can be a very rewarding way to spread the word about your work. When you are building your readership, either in advance of your first published book or as a more established writer, don’t over sell yourself at appearances. Be yourself, open, honest and friendly, but not pushy, loud or arrogant. Readers will remember an author whose heart is in the right place.
