Gift Your Readers

Holiday time is nuts for most everyone in North America, but we writers can make our readers’ lives a little merrier by gifting them.
Writing Tip for Today: It’s a fact: Readers love a value-added experience. This means they get some type of reward beyond just reading your book. However you reach most of your readers (or potential readers as you pre-published grow a readership), via blog, newsletter, FaceBook group or other means, consider some painless ways to gift your reader.

  • Create a PDF file of a chapter or other glimpse into an upcoming book.
  • Hold a contest (one with randomly-picked winner and no entry fee to keep the FCC happy) and give away a book, something related to your book, or a set of your books.
  • Spin off a subject in your books. Let’s say your book is set in Oregon and your protagonist knits or quilts. Maybe you give away a knitting pattern, recipe or quilt design. Gift baskets are popular, but I draw the line at pricey jewelry or other valuables.

  1. Great suggestions. I have mostly given away actual books or pdf versions. The former can get costly once you pay postage (but its all part of the promotional game, I realize.) I appreciated seeing some other ideas. Merry Christmas
